Digging of Water Drainage Channel, Al Hazm district, Al-Jawf Governorate

In December 2024, funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Yemen Alkhair for Relief and Development Foundation (YARD) implemented an important activity to mitigate the risks of flooding impacts on local populations and the IDPs sites in Al-Hazm, Al-Jawf Governorate, in coordination with relevant local authorities.

The activity included:

- Surveying and removing trees obstructing the flood path.

- Digging a drainage channel in the city of Al-Hazm, measuring 2500 meters in length, 12 meters in width, and 0.50 meters in depth, while maintaining appropriate side slopes.

- Piling the excavated material to create earth barriers on both sides of the channel from the same site (with a height of 150 cm and a width of 50 - 100 cm) to prevent floodwaters from flowing into the city and displacement sites.

It is noteworthy that this project contributes to enhancing safety and reducing natural risks, positively impacting the lives of local residents and displaced persons.

It is worth mentioning that this intervention is part of the protection, shelter/NFIs, and CCCM project.
